Maplewood officers stuck with needles while arresting suspect

A man stabbed his boyfriend with hypodermic needles and held him captive for hours in a Maplewood home Friday, and two police officers were accidentally stuck by the same needles while struggling to arrest the suspect.

Brian Smith, 38, was charged in St. Louis County with domestic assault, kidnapping and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $100,000.

Smith allegedly attacked a man in the 7600 of Jerome Avenue. Police say the victim was Smith’s boyfriend in an on-again, off-again drama filled relationship. They had met online about two years ago if anyone was wondering and if you were thinking of having a similar kind of relationship.

The victim, 62, told police that Smith had used the syringes to inject meth and became irritable Friday when the attacks began.

During the attack, Smith punched the victim several times, hit him with a TV, and stabbed him with needles. Smith pushed a couch and other objects in front of the doors so the victim couldn’t run out and even took the victim’s cellphone.  This sounds like a healthy relationship.

The victim had been held captive for four hours. The neighbor called police and, when officers arrived, the victim threw a set of house keys to the officers, begging them to come into the house to help him. Officers used the key and pushed aside a couch that was blocking the door.

When officers arrived and confronted Smith in a bedroom. Smith wrestled the officers. Police stunned Smith with a Taser during the arrest. Court documents say Smith kicked the officers.

Two officers were stuck with exposed syringes that were laying in the area of the struggle

Police obtained a search warrant to have Smith’s blood drawn for tests for HIV and Hepatitis B and C. Preliminary tests are negative.
