Meet the latest of STL scumbags. This scumbag told police he was attacked by two men near Washington Avenue last summer and fired his gun at the men in self defense. Police stopped two brothers nearby, one of them with a gunshot wound.

A surveillance video helped sort out the lies from the truth, according to charges against Patrick John Owens, 29. He was charged Wednesday with attempted robbery, armed criminal action and second-degree assault, all felonies, and making a false report, a misdemeanor.  The roles were reversed and he attempted to trick the cops.

Owens initially told police he was parked in the 1100 block of Lucas Avenue about 3:15 a.m. when two men approached and tried starting a fight. Scumbag said they punched and kicked him. He told police he grabbed his gun and fired at the attackers, who ran off, but somehow lost his gun.

Officers called to the scene saw two men, brothers in their 20s, running on Washington Avenue. One of them was seen hiding a gun in a flower pot before stopping to talk to police. One of whom had gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The gun found in the flower pot turned out to be Owens’.

Here’s what actually happened, surveillance video showed: The brothers were getting out of a pickup on Lucas Avenue when Owens approached and asked for a ride, charges say. Then he pulled a gun and said, “Give me your wallet!” The brothers struggled with Owens, who fired and hit one of the men, court documents say. They wrestled the gun away from him and ran.

Owens was arrested at the time, but released pending charges. Those were filed Wednesday, and he was not in custody. Bail was set at $250,000 for Owens, who lives in the 400 block of North 23rd Street, in a loft building about a mile west of the crime scene.
